How to Protect Your Mac From Weknow.ac and Other Browser Hijackers:
- Get a powerful anti-malware software, capable of detecting and eliminating PUPs. Having several on-demand scanners would be a good idea too.
- Keep your OS, browsers and security software up to date. Malware creators find new browser and OS vulnerabilities to exploit all the time. Software writers, in turn, release patches and updates to get rid of the known vulnerabilities and lesser the chance of malware penetration. Antivirus program’s signature databases get updated every day and even more often to include new virus signatures.
- Download and use uBlock Origin, Adblock, Adblock Plus or one of the similar trustworthy extensions for blocking third-party advertisements on web-sites.
- Don’t download software from unverified web-sites. You can easily download a trojan (malware that pretends to be a useful application); or some unwanted programs could get installed along with the app.
- When installing freeware or shareware, be sensible and don’t rush through the process. Choose Custom or Advanced installation mode, look for checkboxes that ask for your permission to install third-party apps and uncheck them, read End User License Agreement to make sure nothing else is going to get installed. You can make exceptions for the apps you know and trust, of course. If declining from installing unwanted programs is not possible, we advise you to cancel the installation completely.
HI! I purchased the Clean My Mac you suggested and still cannot get rid of the We Know Browser Hijacker. Please advise how you recommend removal if I have followed all steps and it’s still in my browsers.
Hi Julia,
It seems Weknow.ac malware has been updated several days ago: there are a lot of people on Google Chrome Help Forum saying that previous instructions no longer work, and they cannot remove this page from Chrome. Someone said they were able to get rid of Weknow after completely uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome. You can try do that using CleanMyMac (just back up bookmarks and passwords beforehand if you need them). Also you can use Extensions section of CleanMyMac and take a look at Chrome extensions and LaunchAgents; delete or disable suspicious ones.
Thanks so much for your help!!!
IN Google, the option to remove the hijacking fricker is not available.
I’ve followed the steps in Safari, still no change in either browser.
Now what do I do?
Anyone have suggestons for getting rid of we know. I followed all steps above and stil not removing it.
I think Apple needs to come up with this fix. A lot of us have tried all kinds of ways can’t get rid of it
The “weknow” just showed up on my computer 2 days ago. I used malwarebytes and it pulled out all the files. The problem still existed. I worked with a friend to get Chrome and Safari reset. All was good for one day……then it reappeared today. I used Time Machine and went back a couple of days before it showed up to restore. Unfortunately it reappeared. When I was just getting restarted after the restore a “macupdater” box appeared that I needed an update. I refused/cancelled. It reappeared 2 more times and each time I declined. It then went on to update which then becomes the malware. Now….I don’t know what to do or where to go. I’m trying another restore that was about 6 weeks ago…..it’ll be a couple of hours before it’s done. Any help or suggestions please.
